Do I Need an Emissions Test? (Requirements & Eligibility)
Does my truck need an emissions test in Ontario?
Your vehicle needs a DriveON emissions test if it is a heavy-duty diesel commercial motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 4,500 kg. At least one of the following scenarios must apply to you:

Light-duty vehicles, passenger vehicles, and heavy vehicles that do not run on diesel do not need an emissions test.
What is the 4,500 kg weight rule?
The 4,500 kg threshold is the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) that a diesel commercial vehicle must fall under to be applicable for DriveON’s emissions testing rules. Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the minimum weight required for your vehicle to need an emissions test. This weight rating can be found on the driver’s side door or door panel on the manufacturer’s sticker. It can also be found on the engine plate or in the glove compartment sticker.
How do I know if my vehicle needs a test this year?
Once the vehicle is 7 years old it needs an emissions test each year. You should also receive a registration renewal notice from the Ministry of Transportation that states whether an emissions test is required. Do diesel pickup trucks need emissions testing?
A pickup truck that is registered for personal use does not require an emissions test. A diesel pickup needs emissions testing when it’s for commercial use and requires an annual yellow safety sticker. One of the following scenarios must apply to you:

Are there vehicles that are exempt from testing?
Yes. A vehicle that is registered for personal use does not require an emissions test. Motor homes are exempt as well in addition to any gas vehicles. Ontario ended emissions testing for light-duty passenger vehicles in 2019 — testing today applies to heavy-duty diesel commercial vehicles only.
How often do commercial diesel trucks need to be tested?
Qualifying heavy-duty diesel commercial vehicles need an emissions test every year once it turns 7 years old and is tied to your annual registration renewal. Unlike the old light-vehicle program, there is no old age cut-off: A qualifying diesel truck keeps requiring an annual test for as long as it stays registered. Understanding the DriveON Program
What is DriveON?
DriveON is Ontario's digital program for commercial vehicle safety and emissions inspections. It replaced the old paper-based Motor Vehicle Inspection Station (MVIS) program, which ended March 31, 2025. DriveON, emissions and safety inspections for heavy-duty diesel commercial vehicles are recorded digitally, and results are uploaded directly to their provincial database and Service Ontario.
What does "DriveON certified" mean?
A DriveON certified technician is a registered inspector authorized by the Province of Ontario to perform emissions inspections and upload results to the DriveON system. Only certified technicians using approved, calibrated equipment can issue a valid result. Barry's Mobile technicians are DriveON certified, so the official results we produce at your yard are the same results you would get at a fixed Vehicle Inspection centre.
Is a mobile emissions test as official as one done at an inspection centre?
Yes. A mobile DriveON test is identical in legal standing to a test performed at a fixed Vehicle Inspection Centre. The certification requirement is attached to the technician and equipment, not the location, so the pass or fail we record uploads to the same provincial database and Service Ontario and counts for your registration renewal the same way.
What is a VIC?
A VIC is a Vehicle Inspection Centre — a facility accredited under DriveON to perform commercial safety and emissions inspections. Mobile operators like Barry's Mobile perform DriveON emissions inspections that carry the same authority, delivered on-site instead of at a fixed centre.
Does an emissions test cover my safety inspection too?
No — they are two separate inspections, even though DriveON combines them into one digital record. Barry's Mobile performs the DriveON emissions test. We do not perform safety inspections, but we can refer you to trusted local facilities that do.
How the Testing Process Works
What happens during a heavy-duty emissions test?
The test has two main parts after a visual pre-check: An opacity test and an on-board diagnostic (OBD) check. During the pre-check the technician looks for issues such as visible smoke lasting more than five seconds in any one-minute period, exhaust leaks, or a tampered OBD connector — any of which must be fixed before testing continues. The opacity test measures how much visible smoke the exhaust produces, and the OBD check confirms the emissions control systems are working and free of active fault codes.
What is opacity testing?
​Opacity testing measures how dense the visible smoke coming out of a diesel exhaust is, expressed as a percentage. Cleaner exhaust scores lower. Each vehicle must come in under the maximum opacity allowed for its model year — newer trucks are held to tighter limits than older ones because they were built with more advanced emissions controls. A result over the limit for that model year is a fail.
What is an OBD emissions check?
An OBD (on-board diagnostic) check connects to your vehicle's diagnostic port to read whether the emissions control systems are operating correctly and whether there are any active emissions-related trouble codes. A vehicle with an active emissions fault code fails this part of the test. Older heavy-duty diesel commercial motor vehicles cannot communicate with an OBD test and are handled differently under the directive.
How long does a mobile emissions test take?
A single unit is typically tested in under 10 minutes on-site once we arrive and your vehicle is ready. That speed is why fleet testing works so well on a mobile basis — we can move through multiple vehicles in one visit without any of them leaving your yard.
How should I prepare my vehicle for the test?
Start the vehicle about 20 minutes before we arrive so the engine is at operating temperature, have your ownership (vehicle permit) ready, and make sure the VIN plate is visible so we can photograph it. A warm engine and clear documentation keep the test fast and reduce avoidable pre-check issues.
Do I get my result right away?
Yes. Your DriveON inspection result is generated and displayed on the spot, with option to have it emailed to you, and it uploads directly to the provincial database and Service Ontario. There is no waiting for a mailed certificate.
Failing, Retesting & Repairs
What happens if my truck fails the emissions test?
If your vehicle fails, we give you a detailed report showing exactly what caused the failure, you have the necessary repairs completed, and then the vehicle is retested. A fail means you cannot renew that vehicle's registration until it passes, so the fastest path back to compliance is to fix the specific issue on the report and retest. We can recommend certified repair facilities and return to retest once the work is done.
What are the most common reasons diesel trucks fail?
The most common failures are excessive exhaust opacity (too much visible smoke), active emissions-related fault codes flagged by the OBD check, and pre-check issues like a missing or poorly sealing fuel or DEF cap or a tampered emissions system. Tampering with or removing emissions control equipment is treated seriously under Ontario rules and is a separate offence.
How soon can I retest after repairs?
You can retest after 24 hours has elapsed. Because we are mobile, we can often come back to your location the following day so your truck is not sitting idle. Call 905-870-8998 to schedule the retest.
Can you do the repairs for me?
No. Barry's Mobile performs DriveON emissions testing only; we are not a repair shop. This keeps our role independent — we emissions test, we do not have any incentive tied to repairs. We will point you to trusted local repair facilities and retest the vehicle once it is fixed.
Mobile vs. Fixed Inspection Centre Testing
What is mobile emissions testing?
Mobile emissions testing is a DriveON certified emissions inspection performed at your location — your yard, shop, mutual meeting spot, or job site — instead of at a fixed inspection centre. A certified technician brings the approved equipment to you, runs the same official test, and uploads the same official result. For commercial operators it removes the downtime of driving each vehicle to an inspection centre and waiting in line.
Why choose mobile testing over a fixed inspection centre?
The main advantage is zero downtime: Your vehicles stay on your property and your drivers stay on the job while testing happens on-site. There is no drive time to a centre, no line, and for fleets the whole group can be tested in a single visit. The result and certification are identical to an inspection centre test — you are trading nothing on compliance for a large gain in convenience.

Can you test my entire fleet in one visit?
Yes. Fleet testing on-site is what we specialize in — we can test multiple vehicles during a single visit to your yard, from a handful of units to corporate fleets of 50 or more. Because each unit takes only minutes and nothing leaves your property, a whole fleet can often be cleared in one morning.
Is there a minimum or maximum number of vehicles?
No minimum and no practical maximum — we serve single owner-operators and large corporate fleets with the same service. If you have an unusually large fleet or need testing outside our regular service area, call 905-870-8998 and we will make arrangements.
Do you offer same-day or weekend testing?
Yes, subject to availability we can often accommodate same-day requests, and we test early mornings, late afternoons, and weekends (Saturdays) by appointment. We schedule around your operation rather than the other way around, so testing does not interrupt a working day.
What types of vehicles do you test?
We test all heavy-duty diesel commercial vehicles that fall under DriveON, including commercial trucks and tractor-trailers, dump trucks and delivery vehicles, buses and shuttles, landscaping and contractor fleets, large farm and agricultural trucks, dealership inventory, and driving-school vehicles.
